One of the things we frequently hear in our office from our adult patients is “my child doesn’t seem to have any symptoms, but would they benefit from chiropractic care?” Our answer is always, “Absolutely!” While chiropractic is typically thought of an effective means of pain relief, the true purpose of the chiropractic adjustment is to eliminate nervous system interference and restore proper spinal biomechanics, allowing the body to self-heal and self-regulate. Normal structure always results in normal function, and when your nervous system is free of interference, your body is able to function at 100% like it was intended to. Let’s look at a few of the ways that chiropractic care can help your children live their best, most vibrant lives.

#1 – To Enhance Overall Health & Well-Being

I love the old saying “it’s better to build strong children than to repair broken adults”, because it always holds true. I love seeing all of my patients, but some of my favorite visits are when the little ones come in for their wellness checks, because of the profound impact it has on their health, growth, and development. Vertebral subluxation in children can lead to many “common issues” such as breathing difficulties/asthma, irritability, colic, sleep problems, ear infections, bed-wetting, and spitting up, to name a few. A lot of children actually get their first vertebral subluxation during their delivery, so the earlier they can get in to have their spine checked (and corrected if necessary), the earlier they will be set up for success.

#2 – To Strengthen their Immune Systems

A chiropractic adjustment can be just the thing that your body needs to strengthen your immune system. Your brain communicates directly with the immune system, choreographing its response to foreign invaders. The brain sends these messages to the immune structures via the nervous system, which could be prone to interference in the form of vertebral subluxation. By ensuring that your little one’s spine is subluxation-free, you’re ensuring that their immune system is better-prepared to help keep them healthy and strong.

#3 – To Help Manage Colic Symptoms

Besides standard wellness care, this is probably one of the main reasons that parents bring their new babies in to our office. Colic is often described as frequent, prolonged, and intense crying with no apparent cause. This excessive crying can be very frustrating for both the child and their parents. As I’m sure you’re well aware by now, your nervous system is the “master controller” of everything happening within your body, and it is how your brain communicates signals to the rest of your body. If these communication pathways become compromised in any way (i.e. vertebral subluxation), it can result in all sorts of communication errors. For these new babies, crying is their only means of communication, so it would make sense that chiropractic could play a role in managing these symptoms. A lot of our moms remark that their colicky child is noticeably different after a few adjustments.

#4 – Alleviation of Digestive problems

Is your child all “backed up?” Constipation/digestive issues is another very common reason that parents bring their new babies into our office. Research is showing that chiropractic adjustments can help increase the activity of your parasympathetic nervous system, which is imperative for proper digestive function. The list of potential causes of pediatric digestive issues is long, but in our office, we typically get great results by making sure that the lumbar/sacral regions of the spine are free from interference.

#5 – Improved Spinal Posture

Poor posture is an epidemic in society today, and our children are some of the most susceptible to it. Increased technology usage, heavy backpack, and sitting in a desk all day will only further the negative effects on their posture. Harvard Medical research is showing that poor posture doesn’t only contribute to neck/back pain, but it can also contribute to balance issues, headaches, breathing difficulties, constipation, acid reflux, & slowed digestion. This comes right back to the issue of nervous system interference. Every structure in your body is regulated by your brain, and it relies on the spinal cord to transmit those messages to the body. As the spine/posture distort, that distortion placed upon the spinal cord and nerves, leading to a state of dis-ease and dysfunction. In our office we focus on structural correction, helping to restore normal posture and achieve a greater state of health.

If you have any questions about how chiropractic adjustments could help your child live their healthiest, best lives, we encourage you to reach out and schedule a consultation with one of our doctors. We would be more than happy to sit down with you and explain how chiropractic can help your family.
