New Year, New You!

Lakeland Chiropractic

Happy New Year! Now that the 2023 is behind us and 2024 is underway, this is often a time where people decide to “turn over a new leaf” and re-integrate healthy habits into their daily routines. I have found that typically the hardest part of prioritizing your health is simply getting started. Don’t try to make massive, sweeping changes across all aspects of your health right away. It is unsustainable and you will get burnt out. I recommend making one small change in each of the areas of your health and compounding them over time. For instance: if you haven’t been very active the past year, you’re not going to go out and run a marathon tomorrow. For some, even a 5K may not be realistic. But you can prioritize walking for 30 minutes a day.

When I teach about the factors that foster a state of health, I break it up into 5 areas. We’ll go into greater depth on each of these throughout the course of the year.

  1. Nutrition/Hydration
  2. Sleep
  3. Physical Activity/Exercise
  4. Positive Mental Thoughts
  5. Properly-Functioning Nervous System

Providing your body with the proper nutrients is essential to ensure that you are at your best and that your body is functioning optimally. Rather than jumping on a fad diet, maybe you focus on increasing your daily vegetable intake. Maybe you create eating windows and incorporate fasting into your routine.

Sleep is one of the most important and unfortunately neglected aspects of healthy living. Your body is growing, healing, and regenerating when you are asleep, so it must be a priority. We’ll talk more in the next months about how you can improve your sleep.

Regular physical activity will lead to long term health benefits for people of all ages, shapes, sizes, and abilities. It is important to move your body regularly, but even just a little bit of exercise/movement is better than none.

Mental Health has risen to the forefront in recent years and for good reason. Having a positive self-view/attitude is important in that it can impact our physical health. Incorporation of a daily gratitude practice into your routine will help you focus on the good in your life rather than the bad, attracting more good things to you.

The final area of your health is having a properly-functioning nervous system. Your nervous system is your command and control center and it regulates every function happening within you. You cannot be at your best if your nervous system is constantly dealing with interference in the form of subluxation. Prioritize the health and function of your nervous system this year.

Let’s make 2024 the best year yet!
