A new study finds that almost two-thirds of those who take allergy drugs don’t actually need them. Dr. Sheryl Szeinbach of Ohio State University studied 265 patients on allergy medications and found that 65% of them did not suffer from allergies.
This misdiagnosis means people could be wasting up to $80 a month on unnecessary prescriptions. Additionally, these medications can have side effects, and they often fail to relieve the actual symptoms patients are experiencing.
Dr. Beth Corn, an allergist at Mount Sinai Medical Center in New York, comments, “It’s very obvious to anyone who practices in the field of allergy that there are many patients who walk around who are misdiagnosed.” She further explains, “There’s also an incredible influence from marketing where patients will watch television, see commercials, or spot ads on buses, and they want these medications.”
