A case study published in the December 7, 2006 issue of the scientific periodical, Journal of Vertebral Subluxation Research, followed the case of a 48-year-old man who had recently undergone blood and urine tests that indicated the early onset of diabetes mellitus, as confirmed by his medical physician.
This patient sought chiropractic care to explore if non-medical interventions could help him avoid the need for injectable insulin. The author of this report noted that several previous studies had shown varied success with other non-medical therapies for diabetes mellitus, including vitamin therapy, exercise, and acupuncture.
In this case, the patient received chiropractic care aimed at correcting subluxations. Additionally, he implemented nutritional changes, including increased protein intake and specific nutritional supplementation, and engaged in a program of exercise.
Within one month of beginning chiropractic care, indicators used to monitor subluxation corrections showed improvement. In conjunction with these results, the patient’s medical physician observed that his blood and urine sugar levels were balanced. It was determined that the patient would not need insulin at that time, or in the immediate future if his condition remained stable.
The author emphasized that chiropractic care is not a treatment for diabetes or any other specific condition, stating, “chiropractic does not look to treat any condition such as diabetes mellitus.” However, he suggested that chiropractic could contribute positively to the health of diabetes patients if added to their care plans. He concluded, “If chiropractic care can offer assistance in the treatment of 5% of the diabetic conditions commonly presented to healthcare providers, this alone could offer significant lifestyle enhancement for those patients positively influenced.”
